The Neighborhood Matching Fund grant to conduct public outreach concerning issues along the 8th Ave. NE corridor in Northgate is now concluded. Beaver Pond Friends and Neighbors, along with TCA, have submitted the final status report (download the report below) and final claim for reimbursement to the Seattle Dept. of Neighborhoods (SDoN), which funded the grant.
We received a very good report from our outreach consultant, Triangle Associates, and will make it available to anyone interested. It’s based on 123 survey responses, plus in-person public contacts, and does a very credible job of compiling and summarizing their concerns about that corridor, particularly between NE Northgate Way and NE 105th St., including Beaver Pond Natural Area. Those concerns notably included traffic volumes, pedestrian safety, flooding, culvert inadequacy, water quality, integrity of Beaver Pond Natural Area and Thornton Creek, and wildlife safety.
The report has been conveyed to SDoN, Seattle Dept. of Transportation, Seattle Public Utilities, Seattle Parks, and the Seattle Office of Planning and Community Development, as well as to the several survey respondents who indicated interest in helping move on into next steps.
Those steps are not known yet; we’re planning to try to convene a discussion among the volunteers and City department reps early in 2025 in order to begin strategizing. It will likely take several steps and years before the City implements solutions. For now, thanks are due to all who contributed to this effort.
